Traditional Chinese medicine divides insomnia into six types
Anyone who has experienced insomnia can understand the discomfort of being unable to sleep at night. Traditional Chinese medicine believes that sleep is affected by qi, blood, and the five internal organs. If the human body's qi and blood are harmonious and the five internal organs are unblocked, sleep will be normal; on the contrary, an imbalance of qi and blood in the viscera and yang will cause insomnia. Long-term insomnia can cause functional disorders and depletion of Qi and blood in the five internal organs, thus forming a vicious cycle and leading to premature aging or pathological changes.
Traditional Chinese medicine emphasizes syndrome differentiation and treatment. In clinical practice, insomnia is often divided into the following six syndrome types. Adhering to a targeted selection of prescriptions and medicines can achieve good therapeutic effects.
1. Deficiency of heart and spleen, deficiency of qi and blood. People with this syndrome usually have symptoms such as fatigue, palpitations, insomnia and dreaminess, dizziness and forgetfulness, anorexia and bloating, low menstrual flow and light color in women, sallow complexion, pale tongue, weak pulse, etc. It is advisable to use Qi-enhancing methods. Nourishing blood and calming the mind.
2. Intestinal dryness due to lack of body fluid and stagnant qi in the fu organs. People who usually have symptoms such as dizziness and insomnia, dry mouth, odor in the mouth, dry and hard stools, red tongue with little fluid, and yellow and dry coating all belong to this syndrome. Treatment should be to regulate the stomach, calm the nerves, etc.
3. The type of stagnation of energy and disturbed mind. This group of people often have symptoms such as restlessness, insomnia, early awakening, fullness in the chest and flanks, reduced appetite, abdominal distension and pain, bowel sounds, loose stools, thin and greasy tongue coating, etc. Treatment should be soothing the liver and calming the nerves.
4. Insufficiency of liver and kidney and loss of Qi transformation. Clinical symptoms include insomnia and dreaminess, dizziness, dry mouth, five upset stomachs and fever, dry skin, soreness and weakness in the waist and knees, and dry stools. Young and middle-aged men may also experience spermatorrhea, and women may experience menstrual irregularities. In such cases, it is appropriate to nourish the kidneys and calm the nerves.
5. Spleen and kidney deficiency and cold type. Insomnia in bed, pale complexion, soreness and weakness in the waist and knees, cold body and cold limbs, cold pain in the abdomen, late-night diarrhea, difficulty urinating, edema of the limbs, frequent nocturia, etc. are all typical manifestations of spleen and kidney deficiency. In this case, it is appropriate to astringe the intestines, strengthen the intestines, and soothe the nerves.
6. Yang Qi deficiency type. People with insomnia who feel sleepy all night long, have troubled dreams, feel tired and lazy, are afraid of cold and have cold limbs, are forgetful, have a thin and white coating, and have a thin and weak pulse. People with insomnia who have such conditions should support Yang and suppress Yin to calm the nerves.
Some people who have been troubled by insomnia for a long time are accustomed to taking sleeping pills to help them fall asleep. We need to remind everyone that this approach should be treated with caution to avoid adverse reactions such as drug addiction and drug dependence. Especially for the elderly, the functions of their liver kidneys, and other important metabolic organs have declined significantly compared to those of young adults. Therefore, the principle of taking medication should be small doses and frequent intervals.
